Virginia now has "same day" registration, which refers to the ability of individuals to register to vote in person and immediately vote a provisional ballot after the deadline to register and vote a non-provisional ballot has passed. In Virginia, there are various provisions to ensure voting is accessible for all, particularly for those with disabilities:
Accessible Voting Locations: Every voting location in Virginia is equipped with at least one accessible voting machine, allowing voters with disabilities to vote privately and independently. These locations meet both state and federal accessibility standards, featuring amenities such as accessible parking, signage for accessible entrances and pathways, and seating arrangements for those waiting to vote.
Curbside Voting: For voters aged 65 or older or those with physical disabilities, curbside voting is available. This allows you to vote from your vehicle on Election Day. It is recommended to bring someone who can go inside the polling place to request curbside assistance on your behalf.
Assistance Available: Voters who need help due to a disability can request assistance at the polling place. Virginia allows you to bring someone to help you vote, or you can ask for help from election officials. Assistance is also available for completing and reading forms.
Registration and ID Requirements: Voters with disabilities can register at multiple locations, including local voter registration offices, public libraries, and various state agencies like the DMV. Although Virginia no longer requires photo ID to vote, you'll still need some form of identification, such as a voter registration card, a driver’s license, or a U.S. passport. If you do not have any form of ID, you can sign a statement affirming your identity to vote with a provisional ballot.
These measures ensure that all voters, regardless of physical ability, have the necessary resources and accommodations to participate in the voting process effectively and independently.
